Nelliyampathy & Thattekkad - Dream locations for bird lovers
About Thattekkad bird sanctuary
Kerala is undoubtedly a hot spot for bird lovers. Rare species of birds can be located at thattekkad, one of the main bird sanctuaries in India, which is located in the center part of Kerala.
Thattekkad is made up of dense tropical evergreen and deciduous forest and grassland patches, which holds a population of over 500 species of exotic birds. The bird sanctuary, constituted in 1983, occupies the catchments area of the Bhoothathankettu dam. This globally acclaimed bird sanctuary owes much of its fame to Dr. Salim Ali, the internationally renowned ornithologist.
The sanctuary was notified in 1983, as a result of a recommendation made by Dr. Salim Ali, years back. In 1930's he described Thattekad as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, comparable only with the Eastern Himalayas. It is the exotic microcosm of India's bird population that brought Dr. Salim Ali to thattekkad. His efforts were instrumental in the formation of this sanctuary.
Sprawling across an area of 25 sq. km's the sanctuary lies between the tributaries of the river Periyar like a peninsula. Rare flying species like the Bee eater, Sunbird, Crimson-throated Barbet, Shrike, Night Heron, Black Winged Kite, Falcon, Grey Jungle Fowl, White-Breasted Water Hen, Hornbill, Ceylon Frogmouth, Rose-billed Roller and Blue-winged Parakeet exist here. Thattekkad also has extensive plantations of teak, rosewood, mahagony, etc. The thick forest is also the home of almost 28 varieties of animals and nine varieties of reptiles.
